Marianne (Swedish pronunciation (listen), 29/09/1931 until 11/01/2015) was a
Swedish actress well-known for her attractive and striking physique. Her iconic
performance as Sylvia in Federico Fellini's film La Dolce Vita (1960) earned
her fame. Ekberg performed her work mainly in Italy which is where she was a
permanent resident in 1964.Anita Ekberg was born on 29 September 1931 in
(Sweden), the sixth of eight children. As a teenager, Anita worked as a fashion
model. Ekberg was influenced by the advice of her mother in 1950 began to enter
Miss Malmo. She was crowned the Miss Sweden contest. Despite not speaking
fluent English and Swedish, she travelled to the United States to compete to
win the Miss Universe title for 1951. Although it was an informal contest that
was later made an official pageant, it was official in 1952. While Ekberg was
not crowned the Miss Universe pageant, as one of the six finalists she did get
an acting contract with Universal Studios. She was an Universal starlet, and
was given lessons in dramatization, elocution dancing as well as horseback
riding, fencing, and elocution. She appeared briefly in The Mississippi Gambler
(1953), Abbott and Costello go to Mars (1953), Take Me to Town (1953) and The
Golden Blade (53).
