Penelope Cruz Sanchez
Penelope Cruz Sanchez was born in Madrid
to Eduardo Cruz, a retailer, and Encarna Sanchez who was a hairdresser. She was

amuse the family. But she chose to concentrate her energy on dance. After
pursuing classical ballet for 9 years in Spain's National Conservatory, she
continued her training under a series of prominent dancers. She found her
calling at the age 15 when she topped 300 girls in an audition for an agency
that represented talent. The contract she got secured her roles on Spanish TV
shows , as well as music videos. This opened the possibility of a lucrative
career on the big screen. Cruz was first seen in a movie in The Greek Labyrinth

thriller Framed (1992). Her final film, Belle Epoque (1992) was an
Oscar-winning film where she played one of the four sisters competing to win
the love of an attractive deserter army soldier. It also took home several
Goyas in Spain which is the Spanish equivalent to the Academy Awards. Cruz
continued adding films to her portfolio, growing by three or four per year.

film Open Your Eyes (1997), a huge hit in Spain that earned eight Goyas (though
none for Cruz). In 1998, her fortunes changed when she took home a Best Actress
Goya for her role in the film industry comedy La Nina De Tus Ojos (1998). Cruz
went on to make several more journeys into English-language films, but All
About My Mother (1999) was her first major international success. She played a
chaste, but well meaning nun. After the film was flooded with awards and
praises, Cruz was suddenly in demand on both sides of the Atlantic. Woman on
Top (2000) was her next major film. The film was an American comedy featuring a
