Then, she attended Los Angeles City College. Rosie Perez was just starting her second year in college and about to return to New York. Her departure was a party by her peers. She accepted Spike Lee's offer to join his film Do the Right Thing (1989). This was her first major acting part. In Peter Weir's Fearless (1993) the actress played the supporting role Carla Rodrigo, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Artistess. She lost to Anna Paquin, for The Piano (1993). In my early days, the Latin community was responsible for most of the criticism I was subjected to. They used to take me out for lunch and tell me, "Can you go and take lessons to lessen the sound of your voice?". or, "When it's a talk show, how do you not not be funny? My peers gave me a lot of negative feedback about my voice and I even tried. I did my best to change however, it was just the way I spoke. My octaves fell as I grew older I am grateful for that. Today, I am enthralled that a young person of 16 years old comes up and imitates me.Boxing is about overcoming your fears. Boxing is than just fighting for your self. (Who talked about Don Cornelius watching her dancing]: Don Cornelius didn't want to see me dance . I was dancing hip hop which was something that was not known to Californians. They didn't know anything about hip-hop dancing. They only had a basic understanding of locking and popping. Don was thinking, "No. You're an attractive girl." I thought, "What? It's very bizarre. It was really strange.
